United States: 4 Week Travel Guide for First Timers

Having visited the United States multiple times and gotten to know each state well, I’ve learned exactly how long it takes to truly explore its highlights. For first-time visitors, it’s all about striking the perfect balance between iconic landmarks and hidden gems.
I’ve crafted this 4-week itinerary to ensure you experience the best of the U.S., with just the right amount of time in each destination.
Ready for an unforgettable journey? Below is my recommended itinerary for first-timers.
San Francisco – 4 Days
San Francisco, the ‘City by the Bay,’ is a must-visit on any USA itinerary. Home to the world’s last manually operated cable car system, the iconic Alcatraz Island and its prison, and the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, the city offers a unique blend of history, culture, and stunning sights. Beyond the city, day trips to places like the breathtaking Yosemite National Park are also possible.
After all my visits, I’ve found that four days is the perfect amount of time to explore all the must-see highlights in San Francisco.

A visit to Alcatraz is a half-day trip you won’t forget. Take the tour to learn about its notorious past and infamous inmates, like mobster Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. Just make sure to book the ferry ahead of time—it fills up fast!
