How to Spend 48 Hours in Melbourne: A Weekend Itinerary

Melbourne is not just the capital of Victoria; it’s often regarded as the cultural capital of Australia. Known for its stunning architecture, vibrant arts scene, and lively atmosphere, this city offers plenty of culture, activities, art exhibitions, and live music. In many ways, I’ve always seen it as the New York of Australia.
Here’s a simple two-day itinerary to help you make the most of a weekend getaway in Melbourne, especially if this is your first time! It’s fast-paced but allows you to explore most of the major sights, and the best part? Many of them are close to each other. Take advantage of Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone to get around effortlessly. You’ll need to purchase a MyKi pass for places outside the free zone.

Day 1
1. Queen Victoria Markets
Start your day by strolling through the Queen Victoria Markets. Explore the specialty shops, and treat yourself to delicious food and drink options.
2. Flinders St Station
Next, make sure to check out Flinders Street Station. It’s one of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks.
3.Hoiser Lane
Next, head over to Hosier Lane to soak in Melbourne’s iconic street art. The vibrant, ever-changing murals are a must-see.
4.Princess Bridge
Walk to Princess Bridge and capture a photo with the beautiful Yarra River in the background. It’s a quintessential Melbourne spot!
5.Walk along the Yarra River
Take a leisurely walk along the Yarra River or opt for a boat or ferry ride.
6.Wander through the Block Arcade
The Block Arcade has been a cherished shopping destination since its opening in 1892. With its striking glass canopy and intricate mosaic floors inspired by Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the arcade is home to bespoke tailors, jewellers, art dealers, and spice merchants, along with bustling cafes, bakeries, and specialty shops.
7.Dinner and Dessert on the Yarra River
Head back down to the Yarra River for dinner and drinks. There are plenty of restaurants and floating bars where you can grab a bite to eat for Dinner and enjoy a drink.
8. Crown Melbourne’s Gas Brigade
Watch eight towers shoot giant fireballs into the night’s sky. The gas brigade evening show happens on the hour. Make sure to check out the Crowns website to see the show times.

Day 2
1. Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes
Kickstart your second day with a trip to the Brighton Beach Bathing Boxes. Walk along the beach and marvel at the 82 vibrant bathing boxes. I recommend spending at least an hour here to explore, take photos, and even go for a swim if the weather is warm.
2. Luna Park
Next, head to Luna Park for a couple of hours of fun. Whether you want to enjoy the rides or soak in the nostalgia, it’s a great spot to spend a few hours.
3. St Kilda Beach
After Luna Park, cross the road to relax at St. Kilda Beach. It’s also one of the best spots in Melbourne to watch the sunset.
4. Dinner and Dessert on Lygon Street
End your day with a stroll down Lygon Street, where you’ll find various dining options. You’ll have your pick from different cuisines, but whatever you do, don’t miss Brunetti for dessert. Their profiteroles are a must-try!

With this itinerary, you’ll get a taste of Melbourne’s highlights in just 48 hours. The city’s mix of culture, history, and modern charm will leave you wanting more!
